The trendy term nowadays is common in Pakistan as 52% of women is affected by this. This endocrinal problem of women in which women’s bodies secrete a high level of male hormone (androgen) than female prevents eggs from growing normally. It may also cause issues in the menstruation cycle and pregnancy and sometimes infertility. But it can be treated most of the time through prescribed medicines.
PCOD Have you listen to this word before? Yes, you may, but in some other terms. Polycystic ovarian disease in some females has small three to four cysts in ovaries which can be treated. Consequently, in PCOS, it fibred your ovary, which directly affects your metabolism and gives drastic and irreversible results. Irregular menstrual cycles, obesity, acne, infertility, insulin resistance are included as an aftermath of PCOS.
Process of Ovulation:
The reproductive organ of females (Ovaries) undergoes the process every month where ovaries are not fertilised called menstruation.
Hormones, i.e. estrogen and progesterone, regulate a significant role in this cycle. Ovaries produce a small amount of Androgen is also known as a male hormone.
These are times of a month where women can conceive if the egg can fertilise with sperm. Otherwise, disintegrates eggs accumulate on the uterine lining and cause shedding of uterine lining known as a period. Generally, ovulation occurs in the middle of the MENSTRUATION cycle involving these.

Clinical Presentation – Disruption of Menstruation Cycle:
Amenorrhea disruption in a monthly cycle is the most common PCOS presentation. Given below are a few more.
Excess of androgen (male) hormone is the main reason behind unwanted hair, which is medically known as “hirsutism”, a hallmark in 80% of the population. Excess of male hormone and lack of estrogen and progesterone may lead to infertility.
Insulin is a pancreatic hormone that gives glucose to the blood and is used as energy. If this insulin doesn’t provide energy to your muscle and body, the pancreas makes it more to overcome body needs. It means your body glucose level will increase more than it requires. Patient with PCOS has high insulin level, leading to acanthosis nigricans (blackening of knuckles, elbows, line of the neck, knee).
Weight Gain or Obesity:
PCOS, one of the predisposing factors that lead to slow metabolism, lethargy, fatigue, lack of sleep, and mood swings.
Hormonal imbalance may lead to oily skin, which causes acne.
Hormonal changes and your body image both can lead to emotional havoc. Exercise will help you to change your body image also release happy hormones which make you feel better.
In PCOS, there is a higher risk of complications in which may include;
- High blood pressure.
- Pre-eclampsia ( High blood pressure during pregnancy which leads to damage to different organs)
- Gestational Diabetes (diabetes during the period of pregnancy and subside after giving birth)
- Obesity (losing weight can manage this)
Hence, these all problems inter-relate to each other. One may cause other high cholesterol, deposition of fats may lead to long term diseases like heart disease and diabetes, liver dysfunction.
You can manage the symptoms and lowers the odd for the long term risking your life, but you can’t get a cure completely. You can manage your pregnancy or period through medications (metformin and clomiphene and Letrozole, shots of gonadotropin mainly used to manage PCOS symptoms, maintain healthy lifestyles, and losing weight) hormones with the help of exercising, or surgery may also be an option.
IVF is a process where sperm fertilises eggs of females outside of a body and within 3-5 days after fertilization-embryo is placed in the female body.
So women out there, if you read this now, you know somehow what is this term. Don’t be shy and see your endocrinologist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. It might lead to something worse in the future if you don’t take it seriously. You can also conceive in PCOS if you can manage your symptoms early.
