Pakistan’s Talha Talib Ranked Fifth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the 67 KG Weightlifting Competition:

The 21-year-old Commonwealth Games medalist was ranking at the top before he was surpassed by athletes from China’s Lijun Chen, Colombia’s Luis Javier Mosquera Lozano and Italy’s Mirko Zani in the final attempts.

Talha lifted 150kg in the snatch category but fell while attempting 166 kilograms in the first attempt at clean and jerk. In his next effort, he was successful for the same weight, and he later added 170kg to his total of 320kg.

He remained board leader until Korea’s Han Mayekon won the clean and jerk with a lift of 174kg, knocking Talha to second place. Later in the tournament, Luis Javier of Colombia lifted 180 kilograms, and Zalmi Mirko of Italy lifted 177kg in clean and jerk.

Chen Lijun of China won the gold medal by lifting 187kg in the clean and jerk, a new Olympic record, for an overall lift of 332 kilograms in the competition. Nonetheless, Talib’s performance, despite an apparent lack of resources, turned him a hero as Twitterati lauded the 21-year old for his unbeatable Olympics debut efforts.

Former Pakistan captain Azhar Ali lauds Talha Talib while also advocating for more investments in athletes.

Pakistan cricket team allrounder Shadab Khan said, “Pakistan is proud of Talha Talib” as he urged “sports administration and sponsors to help athletes like Talha”.
