Communication Mediums AKA Social Media:

What are Communication Mediums AKA Social Media? After the invention of the internet and its valuable works, the word social media came into being.

If we separate the two words social and media and search their meaning, the word social somewhat involves society. It includes meeting other people in the community rather than work. The word media means a medium of communication. Therefore, social media is a communication medium that means interacting with people with the help of any medium of media.

Now media have many mediums like news anchor on television can give the news to a mass audience simultaneously, but that is not social media. It is mass communication.

What is Social Media?

Social media is used with the help of the internet. It creates connections between us with the help of the internet and through social websites like Facebook, Twitter, Skype, etc.

Before getting into the origins of social media, it’s important to state what we’re talking about when we refer to the term social media. If media is an instrument of communication (i.e. an advertisement for a bank at a bus stop or a news reporter covering a story), social media is simply a social instrument of communication.

More specifically, it is a form of media that gives you information while interacting with you instead of just presenting it. For example, social media websites include everything from YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Who Invented the term Social Media?

If we’re talking about who invented the term Social Media, while many organisations have been performing social media practices for decades in the form of community and content management, we’ve only recently seen the term become a buzzword in the past seven years. So invented the term social media? It took a bit of digging, but the best information I could find on this came from a recent Fortune post which gives the honours to a mixture of the following:

Darryl Berry claims he used the term starting in late 1994 while working on Matisse, an online media environment and for a paper in May 1995 on “social media spaces”, which predicted the evolution of the web into a network engaged users.

In 1997, Ted Leonsis used the term in the same manner in which it is used today. The term was created in the early 1990s while at AOL to describe,

“a mash-up of technology and communications and media itself”.

Tina Sharkey owns the domain SocialMedia.com since 1999 and claims she coined the term during her days working on iVillage, where she was in charge of community building.

The Future:

While social media history may not be 100% clear, its future is much more specific. With 80% of all businesses actively involved in this industry by the end of 2011, this aspect of marketing is sure to keep growing, expanding, and progressing for many years to come.

User nets allowed users to read and post messages to different categories, known as newsgroups. At a high level, they can be thought of as a hybrid between email and the web forums of today. Many of the popular group sites of today, such as Google Groups and Yahoo Groups, and RSS (Rich Site Summary) feeds are based on these technologies. RSS  is a type of web feed that allows users to access updates to online content in a standardised, computer-readable format.

The Number of Users:

Many people use social media around the globe. However, the United States and China lead the list of social media usage. The list of usage is as follows:

The list contains just a set of leading sites, although many more sites people use because of the group of features they give to a user. However, all these sites have some basic features similar that are:

  • It is interactive and Web 2.0 based.
  • Features user-generated profiles.
  • Users generate content. It includes photos, videos, conversations, comments, etc.
  • The platform facilitates connections between users.

Why Should You Give Social Media A Try?

So we have discussed the background of social media, but it does not define why you should become a user of it if you are not.

The primary reason for being a social media user is as we live in a world of technology. We cannot hide from it, and If you try, you seem to lack behind in some ways because almost one in your group must be using social media. It is also a great medium of communication because

Positive Aspects of Social Media:

  • It connects you directly to your loved ones or people you want to communicate with through sited and their user profile from it.
  • You can talk to a person who is seven oceans away from you.
  • For people running a small business, social media is an excellent opportunity for free advertising. For example, if you are a jewellery maker, you can quickly get orders from your customers directly without a third person.

In short, social media provides us with complete connectivity. It brings people with a common interest together and makes a platform to share their life with the rest of the world, but if you focus on the subject for a while there you can also see a few negative aspects of using social media too some of them are:

Negative Aspects of Social Media:

Hacking:

Personal data and privacy can easily be hacked and shared on the Internet. Resultantly, it can make financial losses. Similarly, identity robbery is another issue that can cause economic losses to anyone by hacking their accounts. Several personal Twitter and Facebook accounts have been hacked in the past, and the hacker had posted materials that have affected the individual’s private lives. It is one of the dangerous disadvantages of social media, and every user is advised to keep their data and accounts safe to avoid such accidents.

Addiction:

The addictive part of social media is awful and can disturb personal lives as well. Teenagers are the most affected by social media. They get involved very extensively and are eventually cut off from society. It can also waste individual time that productive tasks and activities could have utilised.

Cheating and Relationship Issues:

Most people have used social media platform to propose and marry each other. However, after some time, they turn to be wrong in their decision and part ways. Similarly, couples have cheated on each other by showing fake feelings and incorrect information.

Health Issues:

The excess usage of social media can also hurt health. Since exercise is the key to lose weight, most people get lazy because of the excessive use of social networking sites. As a result, it brings disorder into routine life. This research by discovery will shock you by showing how bad your health can be affected by the use of social media. Social Media causes death:

Not just by using it, but by following the stunts and other crazy kinds of stuff shared on the internet. For example, bikers doing unnecessary tricks, people doing the jump over the trains and other life-threatening stuff. Another example is of a suicide game which was very popular whose name is BLUE WHALE game which is also causing many deaths of the peoples in this game they gave different dangerous tasks for the people.

Glamorizes Drugs and Alcohol:

One of the disadvantages of social media is that people start to follow wealthy or drug-addicted others and share their views and videos on the web. Which eventually inspires others to follow the same and get addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Cyberbullying:

According to a report published by PewCenter.org, most children have become victims of cyberbullying over the past. Since anyone can create a fake account and do anything without being traced, it has become relatively easy to bully on the Internet. One can send tIn addition, threats, intimidation messages, and rumours to the masses to create discomfort and disorder in society.
