Sindh Minister for Transport, Syed Awais shah inaugurated electric buses in Karachi in March. He said that Sindh Government will issue a tender for the purchase of 250 new electric buses soon. In near future, the number of buses in Karachi will rise from 37 to 100. Moreover, the government will launch similar projects in other cities of Sindh including Hyderabad, Shah added
The minister told the reporters that 37 electric buses will operate on the route connecting Tower to Sohrab Goth at a fare of Rs 4 per kilometer.
The introduction of electric buses will help tackle pollution as Karachi face worse air quality conditions. In December 2020, the federal cabinet approved Pakistan’s first Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy. The Electric Vehicle Policy was endorsed by the federal cabinet followed by approval of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). Fawad Chaudhary, the Minister of Sci-Tech, then announced the introduction of electric buses in Islamabad. However, the Sindh government took lead in taking initiative.
